Scott Dikkers: The Onion

This morning I was scrolling through LinkedIn and came across an interesting post mentioning this guy named Scott Dikkers. I had no idea who he was so I looked him up. He created the Jim’s Journal cartoon and is the founder of The Onion. “Dope,” I thought, “I should hit him up.” So I did what any insane person would do and lurked Instagram to see if he had one. Sure enough he did. I sent him a note and we got to chatting.

I attached a few screenshots but here’s a transcript of the questions I had for him:

Yeah I’ll definitely be binging your stuff online but more importantly I’m looking forward to getting my copy of Jim’s Journal from Amazon.

As far as learning how to write funny, I have a weird thing against it haha. I find it to be forced. I feel the same way about “writing classes.” To me writing is simple.

I guess the main ?’s I have for you are:

Jim’s Journal- did this start as a passion project which led to commercial opportunities

How far can I go - I’m a very loud Jew. But I’ve also worked at Yelp so I’m always cautious of words that can trace back to me.

I hope this ? isn’t rude <<< without creating The Onion would you still have been financially secure off previous work?

Life: when you first started, assuming you’re kind of fucked up in the head, how did you balance writing and having a life. For me it feels like it’s all or nothing.

The Onion: Legendary. Are you still involved?

Sorry for the essay. Typing is the only thing I’m semi good at.

Cheers

My point is this: if you find somebody interesting, reach out, let them know how awesome you think they are. There’s ZERO shame in ADMIRATION.

Side Note: As humans, we are all equal. Nobody is “cool.” We all piss and shit.
